Dragon Ball Watch Order 2026: Every Series, Film, and What to Skip
Dragon Ball spans nearly 40 years of anime, from Goku's 1986 debut as a child searching for Dragon Balls to Dragon Ball DAIMA in 2024. For new viewers in 2026, the franchise is genuinely overwhelming — 7 series, 20+ films, dozens of specials, and conflicting opinions on what's canon. This guide cuts through everything and gives you the optimal path through Dragon Ball.
The Complete Dragon Ball Watch Order
Step 1: Dragon Ball (1986–1989)
153 episodes. Studio: Toei Animation. Director: Daisuke Nishio.
Original Dragon Ball covers young Goku's childhood — his training under Master Roshi, his friendship with Bulma, the first World Martial Arts Tournaments, and his early battles with the Red Ribbon Army and Piccolo. The tone is light adventure, closer to classic shonen comedy than the intense battles of Z.
Filler to skip: Episodes 1, 7–8 (partial), 28–29, 46–47, 82–86, 93–102, 112–125, 148–153 are filler or mixed. The story core is entirely watchable at full speed — the original Dragon Ball is only 153 episodes and moves quickly.
Should you watch it? Yes, if you have time. Watching young Goku makes his relationships in Z — especially with Piccolo — carry much more emotional weight. If you're in a hurry, skip to Z and come back later.
Step 2: Dragon Ball Z Kai (Recommended) or Dragon Ball Z
Dragon Ball Z: 291 episodes (1989–1996). 43% filler. Dragon Ball Z Kai: 167 episodes (2009–2015). Near-zero filler.
Recommendation: Watch Dragon Ball Z Kai. It is DBZ recut to remove filler, power up the audio, and remaster the visuals. The story is identical, the pacing is vastly superior, and it ends after the Cell arc (Kai) or includes Buu (Dragon Ball Z Kai: The Final Chapters).
DBZ Kai covers:
- Saiyan Saga — Raditz arrives, Goku dies, Gohan awakens his power
- Frieza Saga — Namek, the Dragon Balls, Super Saiyan transformation (one of anime's greatest moments)
- Android/Cell Saga — Future Trunks, the Androids, Gohan vs Cell
- Buu Saga — Majin Buu, Fusion, Gotenks, the final battle
If you want the original DBZ experience with all filler, the major filler episodes to skip are: Episodes 1–8 (recap), Episodes 108–117 (Garlic Jr. Arc, completely skippable), Episodes 170–194 (filler between Cell arcs), and scattered filler throughout Buu Saga Episodes 200–219.
Step 3: Dragon Ball Super (2015–2018)
131 episodes. Studio: Toei Animation. Director: Kōhei Hatano.
Dragon Ball Super is set during the 10-year gap before Dragon Ball Z's final episode (the 28-year gap from Z's end to the 28-year-later epilogue). It is fully canon and written with Akira Toriyama's direct involvement.
Watch order within Super:
- Episodes 1–14 — Battle of Gods arc — Can be replaced by the Battle of Gods film (2013), which is superior. If watching the film, skip Episodes 1–14.
- Episodes 15–27 — Resurrection F arc — Can be replaced by the Resurrection F film (2015), which is also superior. Skip if watching the film.
- Episodes 28–46 — Universe 6 Tournament — Watch all. Introduces Hit, the strongest fighter Goku has faced to this point.
- Episodes 47–76 — Goku Black arc — Watch all. Future Trunks returns, and the arc introduces one of Super's best antagonists in Fused Zamasu.
- Episodes 77–96 — Universe Survival Survival arc (setup) — Watch all.
- Episodes 97–131 — Tournament of Power — Do not skip a single episode. The 80-warrior battle royale across 48 minutes of in-universe time is Dragon Ball Super's greatest achievement. Episode 110 (Ultra Instinct debut) and Episode 130 (the finale) are among the highest-rated individual episodes in Dragon Ball history.
Step 4: Dragon Ball Super: Broly (2018 Film)
100 minutes. Director: Tatsuya Nagamine. Studio: Toei Animation.
The Broly film is fully canon — Toriyama wrote the screenplay himself. It retcons and replaces the non-canon Broly films from the 1990s, gives Broly a real backstory, and features the best hand-animated fight sequence in Dragon Ball history (Goku and Vegeta vs Broly, approximately 20 minutes of sustained combat animation).
Watch after completing Super. This film expands the Frieza backstory and sets up story threads that carry into future Dragon Ball content.
Step 5: Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero (2022 Film)
100 minutes. Director: Tetsuro Kodama. Studio: Toei Animation.
The first fully CG Dragon Ball theatrical film. Gohan and Piccolo take center stage — the first time either has been the primary protagonist since the Cell arc. Gohan Beast is introduced here as a new transformation.
Super Hero is lighter in tone than Broly but canon and enjoyable. Piccolo's character work is the strongest he has received in 30 years.
What About Dragon Ball GT?
Dragon Ball GT (1996–1997, 64 episodes) — Skip unless curious.
GT was produced without Toriyama's involvement after Z ended and the manga concluded. It is not part of the official Dragon Ball timeline — Dragon Ball Super explicitly supersedes it. GT has its fans (Super Saiyan 4 remains popular aesthetically), but it contradicts Super's canon in multiple ways.
If curious, watch the GT Final Chapters Special (Episode 64) — it's one standalone episode that serves as GT's emotional conclusion.
What About Dragon Ball DAIMA (2024)?
Dragon Ball DAIMA (2024, Toei Animation) — Akira Toriyama's final Dragon Ball project before his death in March 2024. Canon. Features chibi (small) versions of Goku and the cast in a new realm. Watch after Super and the films. DAIMA was Toriyama's planned next chapter for the franchise and should be treated as canon regardless of your opinion on its art style.

Final Verdict: Best Entry Point in 2026
For most new viewers, start with Dragon Ball Z Kai. It is the fastest path to Dragon Ball's best material, it requires no prior knowledge, and the Frieza and Cell arcs remain two of the greatest villainous arcs in shonen history. Then watch Super for the Tournament of Power.
If Dragon Ball's scope appeals to you, the franchise shares DNA with other long-form adventure anime. See our complete One Piece filler list and our Naruto filler guide for similar navigation guides to anime's other marathon series.
